WWW TC2 Workshop with Jovencio de la Paz: Introduction to Coding for Weavers
Sunday October 6, 9-12 pm
Location: LMRM
2233 S Throop St Studio #211C, Chicago, IL 60608
Introduction to Coding for Weavers
Jovencio de la Paz
All weavers engage in coding. From the manual selection of interlacements in tapestry weaving, to the complex lift-plans of dobby looms, and to the fully digital TC2 Digital Jacquard Loom, weaving is the manipulation of numbers and algorithms through the physical reality of thread and loom. In this introductory course, we will study strategies for weavers to employ code as part of a weaving studio practice. Using Processing, AI assistance, and other free and accessible tools, students will create image generating software specifically to be employed with the TC2 loom at the LMRM. Individuals with absolutely no coding experience are strongly encouraged to attend. Mastery is not the goal of this workshop, but an attitude of play, experimentation, and improvisation is encouraged. Some design experience for TC2 weaving is helpful, but also not necessary.
***Course requirements: a laptop that can run Processing. All the software downloads are free.
Capacity will be limited to 15 attendees. This event is in-person only. Masking strongly encouraged. Our studio has one air purifier to maintain air quality. The entrance is located on the east side of the building with a front desk where guests can buzz into the building. Please call the Mana Contemporary front desk ahead of time for ramp access to the building's main entry at (312) 850-0555. LMRM is located on the second floor, which is accessible via stairs or staff-operated elevators.
No refunds are available for cancellations or no-shows. If you find yourself unable to attend for any reason, we encourage you to find yourself a replacement and transfer your ticket to someone else who may be able to go instead. In the rare instance of emergencies, we will refund ticket sales should LMRM ever need to cancel a workshop.
